ジョン・フィリップス氏(米ポップグループ「ママス・アンド・パパス」のメンバー)
ロイター通信などによると18日朝、心臓疾患のため米ロサンゼルス市内の病院で死去、65歳。
1965年にキャス・エリオットらと４人組のポップグループ「ママス・アンド・パパス」を結成。シンガー・ソングライターとして、66年に「夢のカリフォルニア」「マンデー・マンデー」で世界的な大ヒットを飛ばし、アメリカン・ポップスの新しい原動力となった。ファッションでも、ヒッピーのはしりとして当時の若者の心をつかんだ。
67年にはモンタレー・ポップフェスティバルを主催し、ジミ・ヘンドリックスを初めて米国に紹介した。(共同)

■下にも書いたストーンズとジョン・フィリップス（元ママス＆パパス）の１９７７年のセッションですが、 フィリップスのマネージャーの話では、「〜彼は、およそ２２年前にミック・ジャガーやキース・リチャーズと一緒にレコーディングしたアルバムの５月リリースのプロモートを楽しみにしている。」とのこと。
また、ジョン・フィリップスは、最近まで胃の感染症で苦しんでいたそうですが回復してきており、秋にはニュー・アルバムを発表してロードに戻ることを計画しているそうです。

■お蔵入りになっていた１９７６−７年収録のジョン・フィリップス（元ママス＆パパス）とストーンズのセッション音源が陽の目を見るのではということが数年前にもち上がったことがあったけど（いつの間にかそのニュースはフェイド・アウとしてしまった）、ＵＫ「ＭＯＪＯ」２月号の“ＷＨＡＴ ＧＯＥＳ ＯＮ！”（ニュース）によると、この春そのザ・フィリップス・テープスがオフィシャル化するのではと報じられている。

John Phillips, founder of The Mamas And The Papas, is on the road to recovery
after a period of illness which spawned rumours that he was about to shuffle
off this mortal coil. His troubles started when he broke his shoulder during
the recording of his new album in LA. When he was taken to hospital, tests
revealed that he was also suffering from a stomach infection which had spread
to his liver and kidneys. Heﾕs now recovering with antibiotics and a lot of
rest. Phillipsﾕ manager, Mick Cater, commented, "I am happy to confirm that
reports of Johnﾕs imminent demise have been greatly exaggerated. He is on
the road to recovery and plans to be back on the road later this year. He
is looking forward to completing his new studio album for release in the Autumn
and promoting the May release of the album he recorded with Mick Jagger and
Keith Richards some 22 years ago." Cater is referring to the infamous Half
Stoned album, which was recorded by Phillips with Jagger, Richards, Mick Taylor,
Ronnie Wood and session guitarist extraordinaire Chris Speddingﾊcirca 1977.
"Mick and Keith produced the album," Phillips told Rolling Stone in 1998.
"They were the real drive and thrust behind the album and it was an unexpected
kindness and friendship that they showed for me. The album was recorded for
Atlantic Records, but Ahmet Ertegun didn't think it was right for us all to
be on the same label, so he made me an offer ... and I bought the masters
from him." The sessions featured Taylor's first work with his former Stones
colleagues since leaving the band in December 1974 and Phillips claims there
was some tension among the musicians. "After Mick Taylor played a tremendous
solo on Oh Virginia, Keith turned to him and said, Now I know why I never
liked you!"

Papa John Phillips Dies
Singer Dead At 65 From Heart Failure
John Phillips, the founder and lead songwriter behind the 1960s pop group
The Mamas And The Papas, died early Sunday morning in Los Angeles, surrounded
by friends and family. He was 65. Elizabeth Freund, a spokeswoman for Phillips,
said the singer had been in hospital for several weeks following a fall.ﾊHowever,
the pain was actually related to a stomach virus that affected his kidneys.
Doctors had planned on transferring him to an occupational therapy center,
when Phillipsﾊfell ill several days ago. Phillips, who recently had both hips
replaced, also received a liver transplant a few years back. Starting off
with a group called The Journeymen alongside future Mama Michelle Phillips
and later Denny Doherty, the band became The Mamas And The Papas after Cass
Elliott joined in 1965. In 1966 and 1967, the group had six hits in the top
five, including Monday Monday which was Numberﾊ1 for three weeks. The group
disbanded in 1968.Phillips recorded little throughout the 1970s, as a severe
drug problem took hold. In 1980 he was arrested for drug trafficking and spent
one month in jail. At the time of his passing, Phillips had completed an album
of new material to be called Slow Starter, which included an updated version
of California Dreaminﾕ. He had also just completed Pay Back and Follow, an
album started over 25 years ago with Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith
Richards. The album is set for release in May. Phillips is survived by wife
Farnaz; daughters MacKenzie, Chynna and Bijou; sons Jeffrey and Tamerlane;
and step-daughters Atoosa and Sanaz. No funeral or memorial

元々はデビューアルバムのタイトルを『Raised by Wolves（オオカミ少女）』にしようと思っていたの、とふざけながらビジューは語ってくれた。でも、それでは精一杯頑張って自分を育ててくれた「オオカミ（両親）」に対して失礼だし、それにも増して自分自身に対して失礼だと思い、思いとどまったと言う。確かに若干18歳といえ、ビジュー・フィリップスはテレビドラマにできるほどドラマチックな人生を歩んできた。劇的な人生を歩む周囲の人々に振り回されながら。だが『アイド・ラザー・イート・グラス』は決して他人に振り回された作品ではない。歌詞の中だけでなく音楽的にも彼女の力強さ、勇気そして生活力が感じられる『アイド・ラザー・イート・グラス』は彼女の強い意志の賜物であり、彼女の存在を現実のものとするために不可欠なカタルシスなのである。 ご存知ない方の為に念の為に手短に申し上げると、彼女はジョン・フィリップスの娘だが、母親はミシェル・フィリップスではない。「奇妙」の一言に尽きてしまう彼女の幼少期だが、それについては既に様々なところで語られているので、ここでは敢えて触れないこととしよう（マニアックな方は父親の自叙伝「Papa John」をご参照あれ）。（周囲の人々の乱れた生活に翻弄されていた事実はさることながら）これまで色々なところで書き立てられてきたように、ビジュー自身も決して誉められた生活を送ってきたわけではない。得てして「放縦」、「手の付けようがない」、「無規律」と言われてきたビジューだが、確かに全部が全部嘘だとは言いきれないものの、彼女にも真面目な一面はあって、そ んな真面目な一面がこの『アイド・ラザー・イート・グラス』を生んだのだと言えよう。 「このアルバムだけはどうしても作りたかったの」とビジューは語ってくれた。「だって、今までずっと自分の中で暖めてきたものなんだもの。」優しく上手に誉めながらギターの弾き方を教えてくれた父ジョン・フィリップスだが、その偉大な存在の影で成長するのはなかなか大変であった。彼女にとって音楽とは常に思い入れ深いものであった。「父の注目を得る上で、常に音楽が私のライバルだったの。誰だって親の愛情を巡って兄弟と競うじゃない？ 私の場合は、競争相手が音楽だったというわけ」。先ほど音楽は彼女のカタルシスであると言ったが、「When I Hated Him」などは、そういった意味で敢えて解説するに及ばない。『アイド・ラザー・イート・グラス』に収録されている楽曲の殆どは極めて個人的な内容であり、彼女の内面を覗かせるものである。だが、それだからといって自分のプライバシーが脅かされるわけではないとビジューは言う。「私自身は守られているわ。あれはＣＤなだけ。私じゃあないから。音楽なだけよ」。
